Piero Taruffi, born on October 12, 1906, in Albano Laziale, Italy, was a successful Italian racing driver, engineer, and motorcycle racer. He is best known for his achievements in Grand Prix racing during the 1950s.
Taruffi began his racing career in motorcycles in the 1930s before transitioning to car racing in the late 1940s. He competed in Formula One, sports cars, and endurance racing events, achieving notable success in various competitions.
In Formula One, Taruffi competed between 1950 and 1956, driving for teams like Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, and Maserati. He won the Swiss Grand Prix in 1952 and achieved several podium finishes throughout his career.
Aside from his success in Formula One, Taruffi also excelled in endurance racing. He won the Mille Miglia in 1957 driving a Ferrari 315S and set a record average speed of 162 km/h for the race that stood for many years.
After retiring from racing, Taruffi worked as a journalist and technical consultant, sharing his knowledge and experience with the younger generation of racers. He passed away on January 12, 1988, leaving behind a legacy as one of Italy's most talented and versatile racing drivers.
